How to create the smokey eye look

I absolutley love smokey eyes.

(for tips on how to do smokey eyes and what colours will suit you scroll down)

but not every one can pull them off, some people say its to do with your skin tone or hair/eye colour. Tbf, they suit variations of tones and colours because you can swap the colours you use.

i think it's all to do with youur confidence and personality. Now im not saying that if you're shy you can't pull it off because you can but if you lack in personality but are bold with your make-up, it will make you seem even duller as a person.

Taylor Momsen for example.

on gossip girl she plays J humphrey, who is bitchy but every one knows that at the end of the day she is sweet and kind. Now what Taylor has to realise is that that image rubs off on her. so when shes running round new york and hollywood with her thick black smokey eye make up, that is just not going to work.
One thing it makes her look cock-eyed and another thing it doesn't suit her outfit. That dress is not the nicest but it is elegant, so that adding the smokey eye look just says " i felt a bit BLAAHH, so i just mixed it up."

when she switches to lighter shades of browns and cream tones, it brings out the blue in her eyes and still says " i take a chance with make up" because at the end of the day thats what the smokey eye is. Taking a chance. Gah . That sounds soo cliche.

Which one do you think is better?

Left : Brown & cream Right: Black & Grey

How to create the 'Smokey Eye' look.

What you need

Primer
People say you don't really need to prime your eyes or use a base coat but if you don't it will have a poor finish and it will fade and smudge easily. Now when your trying to make a statement the last thing
you want is to have dark streaks of make up down you face. Elizabeth Arden, Urban decay and M.A.C all do good primers. Just search it on their websites or on a Health and beauty site like Boots, Superdrug or Sally's.

Eye Shadow
You will need at least three different shades of colour. That could be:
Black,Grey and Light grey/White
Dark Brown, Medium Brown and cream
Navy Blue, blue and a light blue/cream/white
mauve/indigo, violet/lilac and a light purple /white
(for obvious reason i couldn't show that Whites and cream's in the actual colours)

you can really do it with any colours from any make, just find whatever you have lying around and use them, but make sure they match or co-ordinate with what you wear in some way.

to make it a whole lot easier you can buy the smokey eye palettes with the right colours already in them.
Mascara
there are alot of celebrity endorsed mascara's with brands like l'oreal , Bourjois, Max factor and maybelline... especially in the Uk. my personal favourite is from a store called Boots,
' 17 Ultimate Volume Mascara'
personally i don't think there is any point in wearing mascara if it doesnt build volume and length so this is perfect. This doesn't cost much, only £5 or £6 but if you want a cheaper alternative there is
'Boots Natural Collection LashBuild Mascara'
It only cost £1.99 but is amazing. as is all of the products in Natural Collection, they are all £1.99 or less but are better then most or the leading brands.
Also
Natural Look false eyelashes are always a good idea. if you you the bigger one's like Katie Price(Jordan), they'll look over the top. the only place they really work is in photoshoots, at premieres/on the red carpet and on the catwalk/ stage productions.

Eyeliners
you should use a black liquid or kohl liner to line you upper lashes.
this is optional but creaes a good finish.

Glitter shimmer
You can get it loose in mini pots. It's white with silver flecks of glitter in it.
Barry M 'Dazzle Dust' in silver iridescent is the equivalent of what i use.

White eyeliner pencil
This is my personal choice. i line my lower water line with it from the inside corner to about 2/3's of the way across and fill in the end gap with black.
It gives you a wide eyed look.

How to create it.
(read fully before attempting)
1. Prep the eyelids.like I saidthe primer stops it from smudging and fading by creating an oil-proof barrier.
2. Colour in.
  • use the lightest colour you have and go from lashline to eyebrow.you can blend it in under you lower lashline aswell.
  • Get the darkest colour either on your finger or a brush and blend it from the outer corner of your eye inwards, following the crease, you should make it lighter the further in you go. you should go over it a couple of times.
  • At this point you eyelid should be your lightest colour with a dark rainbowshape going across it. It should be wider and darker on the outer corner.
  • Fill in the outer half of the semi circle you have create with the medium colour and blend. You blend so the edges of each colour are seamless and run through to the next.
3.Apply Eyeliner.
  • Apply the liquid or kohl eyeliner to your top lashline. This creates a nice and chic finish. If at the outer corner you want to create a point, join it to the lowerlash line but only line 1/3 of the ower lashline or it will look OTT.
  • For the 1/3 of lash line you have lined, use a black kohl liner on your waterline to line the same amount. This should be the outer corner(closest to your ears.)
  • For the other inner 2/3 of water line, line with the with white pencil to the inner corner. this is matched by the light coloured eyeshadow you put down earlier.
  • (only if you've used white) use the glitter shimmer dust and go over the white parts to add another dimension to the make-up.
4.Mascara
  • Apply mascara to the top side of your lashes first to help build length but be careful to not get it on the eyeshadow.
  • Apply to the underside of your lashes going up in a 'zig-zag' motion to keep them separated.
  • Repeat a couple of times
That's it. That is basically how to do a smokey eye.

The Start of Something New

This is the start of something new. (And i mean that in the least High School Musical-ish way possible (nothing against them.)

I am creating this site to help the needy and the careless. To save the chamail worthy people from fashion and style disasters. I am here to share my savvy with the world and expect nothing but a world of beautiful people. I am not a conformist and very far from it. I am not aiming to turn everyone into barbie dolls because that is sick. I am here to share my knowledge of fashion, make up and hair tips with the world. To make you aware of Fashion Do's and Fashion Don't's and help you with any problems of the aesthetic kind.

I will always rate things, there may be in between options for rating but for now i will leave it at Chamail and Kudos.

Chamail= Cringe worthy + Shame on them + Fail
Kudos = Praise to them , glory glory hallelujah and all that jazz.
